Robotic POP’s eye, Perception On Purpose

Perception on Purpose (POP) researchers from Europe attempted to integrate the two major sensory disciplines to a robotic head. In the process of development, the technology has taken the robot to a new level, combining data from both sound and vision to create combined, purposeful perception.
Currently, robots cognitive and auditory perceptions work separately. When the robot sees an object, it identifies the shape and use of that particular object. On the other hand, a robot receives sound input and can only respond or interact from pre-recorded information. These robotic perceptions are "but weak in understanding human behavior and even in conversations". Improving on the way robots interact with humans is what Perception on Purpose project is all about.
POPeye, the name of the robot, is integrated with both cognitive and sound systems. Purposefully, two powerful cameras and two microphones are placed in the "head" of the robot which serves as its central "cognitive system". So far, the POP project has significant results in combining both sound and vision in interpreting data from the environment.
