Robotic Snake – SnakeBots in the Spotlight

Over the years, several models of robotic snakes have been developed by the researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer.
Their recent robotic snakes are called snakebots. Snakebots move like the real thing.
Snakebots are intelligent and they move with the help of hydraulic pressure and coordinated joint movements. There are many applications for these snakebots.
They can perform life-saving operations like fighting fires where humans cannot go through; rescue operations in explosion, earthquake areas and in other adverse environments; underwater operations like maintenance of oil installations on the sea floor.
With more versatility and varied behaviors, these snakebots can crawl, swim, climb a pole, pass trough a fence, and role down the stairs. They can access secured locations and can thread through tightly packed volumes that people and machinery cannot use.
Carnegie Mellon researchers said that the modularity of the robots enables the users to set its rigidity in effect affecting its maneuvering ability and durability.
This technology already attracted potential customers. And scientists say it can be tailored for various fields.

This is so interesting. The snakebot is like something you see in a science fiction movie, but it exists right here, right now. The possibilities are endless.
