Good Robotics Competition?

Quackmaster7000 asked:

I recently went to a robotics competition at Clemson University in South Carolina, and I was very inspired to get my school involved in robotics. The competition was called FIRST (it's an acronym for For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). I am going to start a club at my school for robotics, but I'm still not sure what to get involved with (what PROGRAM, such as FIRST, JETS, etc.). I would love to become involved with FIRST, but there are a lot of hurdles involved with becoming a FIRST team, and competing. Up front, you have to pay $6,000. Then you have to find mentors to help your team, as well as sponsors to help you out financially (the cost of the robot kit is ~$5,000). You also have to pay for advertising. Also, your team must be VERY organized and have a wide veriety of people with all different traits (artists for the asthetics of the robot, writers for press releases, etc.). What kind of program should I enter? Erm...I Googled that, and it came up with nothing....
