Robotic Device Aid in Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

For the last several years, researchers have been trying to look for ways in order to help patients suffering from various brain injuries. Engineers at MIT have been testing a device which helped stroke patients to mobilize their arms and legs.
Now, the technology has been upgraded to support therapeutic treatments for cerebral palsy patients. "Robotic therapy can potentially help reduce impairment and facilitate neuro-development of youngsters with cerebral palsy," says Hermano Igo Krebs, principal research scientist in mechanical engineering and one of the project's leaders.
The device was designed in such a way that when a patient tries to a stationery object, it would guide his arms to move. If he goes the wrong way, or does not move at all, the robotic arm gently nudges the child's arm in the right direction.
Though the device is focused more on upper body therapy, the researchers are optimistic that the pediatric robot for the ankle will be launched soon.
