Deep-Sea Robot Explores the Ocean Depths

Beyond the magnificent skies and the rough seas are the spaces or places difficult to explore. Despite the modernity of science, still there are parts of the world that yet to be explored. One is the ocean floor, that has long been a subject of interest for researchers and scientists.

At MBARI, researchers have developed a deep-sea robot that can rover the ocean floor, for the main objective of collecting information on the amount of oxygen consumed by marine organisms, the amount of food filtered down the ocean from the surface, and how climate change affects their food supply.

The robot, Benthic Rover have undergone a month-long, deep-sea exploration in July 2009. It was able to complete its mission crawling across the muddy ocean floor about 25 miles off the coast of California. After this, Benthic will be sent to much longer missions to Antarctica to study how the receding seasonal ice pack is affecting deep sea life.
